I notice the heavily pregnant mother in the shop, but she doesn’t notice me,

I smile at a new mum with her brand new baby in the restaurant, but she doesn’t smile back at me,

I pay for petrol, and the checkout assistant assumes it is a normal day for me,

I wait in the doctor’s surgery and everyone talks to the new dad and his baby, but no-one talks to me,

I wish I had it written on my t-shirt,

I had a baby last week you see, but that baby is not with me,

Then I arrive at the NICU, and the nurse says “hello mummy”,

I put my hand into the incubator, my baby clasps my finger,

And finally, I feel special again,

I wish I had it written on my t-shirt,

I am a mother you see, but my baby is not with me
